NCAA Tournament: U of L by the numbers

The University of Louisville men's basketball team is preparing to take on Oregon in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 on Friday night. Cardinal Authority has some stats, figures and other numbers that pertain to the Cardinals and/or their run to a national title as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

1 - The number of college programs that have a men's and women's team in the Sweet 16 and also had a football team win a Bowl Championship Series game. Take it a step farther and the men's soccer team also made the Sweet 16.

2 – The number of national titles won by Louisville. The Cardinals collected the national title in 1980 and then again in '86.

3-2 - U of L's record in the NCAA Tournament when playing a No. 12 seed. The Cardinals lost in 1990 to Ball State and again in 2003 to Butler. The Cardinals were the No. 4 seed in both of those seasons.

6 - The number of Final Four appearances for U of L coach Rick Pitino, with three different schools.

6.3 - The turnover margin the Cardinals hold over opponents, which ranks second nationally.

7 - The number of 30-win seasons by Rick Pitino during his career, including his time at Boston U., Providence, Kentucky and U of L. He ranks third on the list of coaches accomplishing that feat behind only Mike Krzyzewski (12) and Roy Williams (10).

7-1 - U of L's record in NCAA Tournament games played all-time in the city of Indianapolis.

8-2 - U of L's record as a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinals were also a No. 1 seed in 1983 and 2009.

9 - The number of trips to the Final Four by Louisville all-time, including an appearance last season. It's the seventh most of any school

10-0 - Rick Pitino's record in Sweet 16 games.

11.0 - The number of steals the Cardinals average per game, which ranks second nationally.

12 - The current winning streak for the Cardinals, tying Texas Southern for the longest current streak in the nation. Texas Southern wasn't eligible for postseason play because of NCAA sanctions.

16.3 - Average scoring margin for the Cardinals this season, which ranks fourth among Division I men's teams.

17.8 - The scoring margin during the current 12-game winning streak. Only Syracuse's 58-53 loss was within 12 points of the Cardinals.

18-0 - The all-time record of No. 1 seeds playing a No. 12 seed in the men's NCAA Tournament.

18.7 - The average number of turnovers the U of L defense has forced this season with the Cardinals collecting double-digit steals in 28 of 36 games.

19 - The Cardinals have advanced into the Sweet 16 round now 19 times, including four of the past six years. The Cardinals are 12-6 in the Sweet 16 round and have an 8-4 record in regional championship games.

20 - The number of steals the Cardinals had last week against North Carolina A&T, setting a new NCAA Tournament single-game record.

21 - The U of L school record for steals in a single game, set on Feb. 22, 1975 against Tulsa.

31 - The current number of victories by the Cardinals, which matches the fifth most in school history. It's the first time ever that U of L had recorded back-to-back 30-win seasons.

32 - The number of three-pointers the Cardinals have connected on in five postseason games. The Cardinals are 32 of 82, which is 39 percent.

35-6 - Rick Pitino's NCAA Tournament record as a higher seed. He has an 18-3 record as a No. 1 seed.

36 - U of L has won 36 of its last 49 post-season tournament games over the last eight years in the NCAA Tournament and the NIT.

43-8 - U of L's record in NCAA Tournament games all-time when the Cardinals have been the higher seed.

54 - Sophomore forward Chane Behanan's number of dunks this season, which ranks second in school history for most in a single-season. Pervis Ellison had 59 during the 1987-88 season. Freshman Montrezl Harrell has 43.

104 - Number of career dunks for Chane Behanan, who ranks fifth on the all-time list at the school. He trails Pervis Ellison (162), Darrell Griffith (156), Alvin Sims (123) and Cornelius Holden (117).

106-38 - The four-year record for the senior class at U of L, which ranks third in school history. The Cardinals were 109-26 from 1979-83.

126-8 - U of L's record over the last 12 seasons under Rick Pitino when scoring 80 or more points, including 9-1 this season.

246 - Peyton Siva's number of career steals, which is the all-time record for a U of L player.

254 - The number of blocked shots during his career for center Gorgui Dieng. The junior trails only Pervis Ellison (374) on the all-time list.

306 - Rick Pitino's number of wins during his tenure at U of L.

662 - The number of career assists by senior point guard Peyton Siva, who ranks second in school history behind LaBradford Smith (713).

664 - Russ Smith's total number of points this season, which ranks fifth in school history for a single-season. Darrell Griffith scored 825 in 1979-80.

836 - The number of points the Cardinals have scored off turnovers this season. That's 31 percent of the U of L offense or 23.2 points a game.

1,151 - The number of career points by junior Russ Smith.

1,170 - The number of career points by senior Peyton Siva.
