U of L baseball opens against Bowling Green

The University of Louisville baseball team found out the path it must take to try and make it to the College World Series on Monday. The Cardinals are hosting a regional in the NCAA Tournament, which had the 64-team field unveiled on Monday.

The University of Louisville's quest for a second trip to the College Baseball World Series will begin on Friday night against Bowling Green.

The Cardinals (46-12) will serve at the host of the Louisville Regional and will be the No. 1 seed, facing No. 4 Bowling Green (24-29) on Friday at 6 p.m. in Jim Patterson Stadium. No. 2 Oklahoma State (39-17) and No. 3 Miami, Fla., (36-23) will play in the other regional game at 2 p.m.

"It's quite an accomplishment to be one of the top 16 seeds in the country," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "It shows how consistent we have been all year and what an opportunity for our fans.

"This is why we expanded Jim Patterson Stadium."

The double-elimination regional will play two games on Friday, two on Saturday at noon and 4 p.m. and two more on Sunday. A final game is slated for Monday night at 6 p.m., if necessary, to decide who advances into the Super Regional round.

"You have some tradition coming here," McDonnell said. "Oklahoma State was here a few years ago for the Super Regional, everybody knows Miami and their long tradition of success and anytime you have a team that wins their conference tournament – like Bowling Green – they're coming in on a high."

U of L won the Big East regular-season title but then lost the first two games of the conference tournament last week in Clearwater, Fla.

McDonnell said regular Friday night starter Chad Green will likely get the start against Bowling Green with Big East Pitcher of the Year Jeff Thompson set to go on Saturday. He said the rotation after that would be decided later this week.

"We'll just have to see matchups," McDonnell said. "Our guys are ready to go. We had a scrimmage this morning and they're focused."

U of L has a record of 31-5 this season at home.

Bowling Green is in the tournament for the first time since 1999 after winning the Mid-American Conference Tournament, defeating Ball State 7-0 in the championship game, on Sunday.

All-session tickets are $70 for reserves chairback seats and $45 for college students and are available now at Ticketmaster.com or by calling the U of L ticket office starting Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. at 502-852-5151.

Single session tickets, including reserved chairbacks and berm seating, will go on sale Friday morning at 9 a.m. at the Papa John's Cardinal Stadium ticket office or at Jim Patterson Stadium at noon.
