Jaylen Brown's AAU coach relayed a message to the Class of 2015 small forward on early May to return a phone call to a certain college.
The call was from defending national champion Louisville and it surprised the 6-foot-6, 215-pound Brown, who is from Marietta, Ga., Wheeler High School.
"I didn't know they were really recruiting me," Brown said. "It was kind of out of nowhere but my AAU coach said they called and I needed to call them back.
"When I called them, they offered me a scholarship. I was surprised."
Brown, who plays in high school and with the Game Elite AAU program along side another U of L target – Daniel Giddens – said he's been talking a lot to the U of L coaches and will "for sure" give them a hard look.
Ranked as the No. 11 player overall in the '15 class by Scout.com, Brown also has offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson, UCLA, North Carolina State, Florida, Alabama, Florida State and others.
"It's exciting for me," Brown said. "It's a humbling experience and it's exciting. But I am trying not to play attention to it. I am trying to stay grounded. But it has been crazy. One weekend I think I got eight or nine offers."
Brown was surprised by the U of L offer but also said he was "really excited" because he watched the Cardinals win the national title last season.
"I like the style they play," he said. "Of course, they just won the national championship, so they're a school I am looking hard at.
"Coach Pitino is a winner and that's what I like."
Brown said he and Giddens, a 6-foot-10 prospect and the No. 17 player in the country, have talked about playing together in college.
"It's possible," he said. "We've talked some about it, mostly just joking around now. We still haven't really broken down what we want in a school yet."
