U of L hoops: 5 things to look for

It's the first day of the second July evaluation period for college basketball coaches. The coaches can be on the road starting at 5 p.m. tonight through Sunday evening. Here are five things to watch for with Louisville recruiting.

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino has three commitments already in the Class of 2014 with Quentin Snider, Shaqquan Aaron and JaQuan Lyle. The Cardinals are in on some top big men and will likely try to sign three.

Here are five things to watch for:

1. Who does Coach P check out: Rick Pitino will be out on the recruiting trail for much of this second period and the prospects he watches will be top targets. With so many tournaments and so spread out, it's not going to be easy for the coaching staff to maneuver around the country. So, Pitino will have to be picky. The problem is there's not one event with a bunch of targets like last weekend.

2. Who's up first? Well, that didn't work last week. Pitino was scheduled to go to the Rebook event in Philadelphia and had weather troubles getting in, so he ended up in Indianapolis. My guess is Myles Turner, a prospect who was injured last week, will get an early look. Will be the first look for Pitino this week? I would imagine Turner gets a lot of attention.

3. What about Robinson:?: Pitino went to Myrtle Beach, S.C., last week for one game to see Elbert Robinson and Wyking Jones was there for at least one more game. Does Robinson stay on the list? It remains to be seen. A big key is watching this week and see if the staff heads to Dallas just for the big man.

4. How interested in the JUCO prospect?: Assistant coach Mike Balado spent time at the Junior College event last weekend and the Cardinals have made a little move on Cinmeon Bowers. How serious are the Cardinals? It appears to be a lot of interest but the next step would be getting Bowers in front of Pitino playing. Will that happen this weekend in Atlanta?

5. The focus shifts to young guys: Pitino said earlier this week the Cardinals were still in on eight to 10 '14 prospects and about a dozen '15 targets were being evaluated. Expect that number to grow this weekend. The staff will head to Las Vegas next week for a huge finale.
