Louisville football: Weekly notebook

With just 46 days left until the opening game of the University of Louisville football season, Cardinal Authority is set to bring you football content every day between now and the Ohio U. game on Sept. 1. We will bring you a Louisville football notebook each Wednesday between now and the end of the season.

The National College Football Awards Association has been rolling out the "watch lists" for this season's awards during the past two weeks.

And the University of Louisville has been very prominent.

The latest players to join the list of guys who could win major awards at the end of the season have been quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and wide receiver DeVante Parker, who were both named to watch lists this week.

Bridgewater, who last week was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award given to the top player in the country, was placed on the Davey O'Brein Watch List. The award is given to the best quarterback in the country.

There are 34 players on the watch list.

He was one of five semifinalists for the award last year, along with winner Johnny Manziel and finalist Braxton Miller, named to the watch list this season.

Parker, who is expected to be a top target of Bridgewater again this season, was named to the watch list of the Biletnikoff Award, presented to the nation's top wide receiver by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.

Here are other players on watch lists with the award in parentheses: linebacker Preston Brown (Rotary Lombardi and Butkus); John Wallace (Lou Groza); Calvin Pryor (Bednarik and Jim Thorpe) and Hakeem Smith (Bednarik, Jim Thorpe and Bronko Nagurski). Others will be announced later this week.

U of L running back coach Kenny Carter will have plenty of depth in the back field this season with Dominique Brown and Corvin Lamb ready to roll and Senorise Perry looking to get back on the field after a knee injury.

And then there's Brandon Radcliff.

The 5-foot-9, 220-pound redshirt freshman sat out last season as his redshirt but rushed five times for 56 yards in the spring game.

"I love him," Carter said. "He's a young guy trying to find his way but the more reps he takes, the better he's going to be and we're going to drench him (with reps in the fall camp). We're going to give him as many reps as we can."

Bridgewater was announced as one of 151 nominees for the 2013 AllState AFCA Good Works Team.

The Good Works Team has honored college football players at all levels of the sport for their selfless acts of giving back to the community and off-the-field achievements. The Good Works team will comprise of 11 Division I players that will be announced in September.

It's almost that time – football season.< /p>

The first practice will be Aug. 6 with the kickoff luncheon on Aug. 13.
