U of L hoops recruiting: 5 things we learned

The second evaluation period of July is in the books for the University of Louisville basketball staff and while it wasn't as busy as the third or third periods, we still learned quite a few things from the Cardinals. Here's a look at five things we learned from watching the coaching moves during the week:

1. Pitino wants to add experience: We told you about Rick Pitino and the Louisville staff showing some interest in junior college players last weekend. But now the amount of attention has been ramped up for JUCO forward Cinmeon Bowers. The 6-foot-7, 260-pound Bowers has become a priority guy for the Cardinals, who are expecting to lose Chane Behanan and Montrezl Harrell. It's obvious that Pitino wants to add Bowers to ensure some experience at the power forward position heading into the ACC in 2014.

2. Top centers get the attention: It appears the race for a center is down to a couple of guys for the Cardinals, who spent a lot of time watching Cliff Alexander and Myles Turner, including the first game Pitino attended this event pitting the two starts against each other. Those two and Goodluck Okonoboh appear to be the main focus right now, with Trey Lyles the focus at forward. Lyles and Angel Delgado didn't play during the second period.

3. Honing in on some youngsters: While the main focus has been on filling the final spots in the '14 class by the coaches, the shift began last week to start focusing more on the future. The staff watched a bunch of 2015 and 2016 prospects, including three Canadian stars at the Nike Global Games. The brand is hot right now and the Cards are getting in the mix with a ton of big-time players.

4. Don't expect anything too soon: As soon as I type this, the Cardinals are probably going to get a commitment. No, looking at the guys left on the board and listening to what each says to the media I would say it will be a bit before the Cardinals' land another commitment. I wouldn't think all of those guys would go into the spring but I think many will take five visits this fall before deciding. So, it looks like you are going to have to wait a bit to fill the class.

5. Off to Vegas: Pitino was out for parts of four days last week with all three staff members on and of the road during the period. Expect the Cardinals to hit Las Vegas hard this week after the visit to the White House. The coaches will be wearing the new championship rings and will be all over Sin City. There's upwards of 1,000 teams in the area with many of the top targets. Should be fun.
