Cards ranked No. 9 in coaches' poll

The University of Louisville football team earned its highest preseason ranking ever on Thursday. The Cardinals were ranked No. 9 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.

Louisville finished 11-2 last season, won the AllState Sugar Bowl and expected a lofty ranking with all of the veterans back on the team.

And on Thursday, that ranking came through as the Cardinals were tabbed No. 9 by the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.

The Cardinals are the only team from the American Athletic Conference in the top 25 and the ranking is the best since 2007 when U of L opened No. 10 in the AP and No. 11 in the coaches' poll that season.

It's the first time the Cardinals have appeared in the initial coaches' poll since 2007.

The AP poll is expected later this month.
