It's still just the preseason, but University of Louisville football coach Charlie Strong was on top of his game Tuesday morning.
Strong delivered a powerful 19-plus minute speech to the more than 1,500 fans assembled in the downtown Marriott for the U of L Football Kickoff Luncheon.
The fourth-year head coach started the talk, joking with Dr. Mark Lynn of Visionworks about a stadium expansion. Lynn, who is funding the new U of L soccer stadium, had also made a joke about needing another football expansion.
"If we keep playing the way we're playing, we're going to get that (Papa John's) stadium expanded," Strong said with a laugh.
And he ended it with a strong statement about the program:
"We aren't where we need to be," he said. "We aren't where we want to be. We aren't like we ought to be. But thank God we aren't what we used to be"
Strong touched on a number of topics during the speed, not mentioning many of his current players but addressing the autograph issue and also talking about the core values of his program.
"The theme this year is, it's all about us," he said. "We're not going to worry about the opponent, we're not going to worry about our schedule, we're not going to listen to the noise in the system."
