U of L to face Auburn in '15 opener

The University of Louisville will play Auburn University to open the 2015 college football season in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl kickoff classic in the Georgia Dome. The school confirmed the game on Thursday afternoon.

There have been plenty of pundits question the strength of the University of Louisville football schedule heading into this season.

But they won't be able to do so in the future.

The Cardinals, who join the Atlantic Coast Classic next season, will play Auburn in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl kickoff classic on Sept. 5 to open the 2015 season.

The game will be played in the Georgia Dome and will air nationally on either ESPN or ABC in an opening weekend premier game.

"The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game has an outstanding tradition of putting together great match-ups, and facing Auburn in this type of event is great for our program and university," U of L coach Charlie Strong said. " "We look forward to opening the 2015 season against a great SEC opponent like Auburn. I'm very excited for our fans that will get the opportunity to be a part of a great game and an exciting atmosphere. The exposure our football players and our program will get from a match-up like this is tremendous as we continue to build this program, and it is going to be a great experience for our fans."

U of L said tickets for the game will be evenly split between the two teams, creating a true neutral-site game. All tickets go through the schools.

The Cardinals have faced Auburn only one time in school history, meeting the Tigers in 1974 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.

The Cardinals will also play at Pittsburgh, at Florida State, at North Carolina State, at Wake Forest and at Kentucky in the '15 season.
