Cards and Hurricanes are familiar foes

Louisville and Miami have not met on the field since 2006 but the two programs are familiar foes. The Cardinals have plenty of connections to the Hurricanes program, including coaches, current players and future players.

The University of Louisville football team has plenty of connections to its opponent in the Russell Athletic Bowl - Miami, Fla.

The Cardinals have 23 current players from the Miami area and already have four commitments in the Class of 2014 from the area.

Among those from the area, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater who was at one time committed to the Hurricanes.

Another former Miami commitment playing a big role at U of L is linebacker James Burgess Jr. His father, James Sr., played at Miami and also played in the National Football League.

The Cardinals also have four commitments in '14 from the area and U of L coach Charlie Strong said the staff will continue to make the South Florida area a priority.

U of L is also getting a visit next month from Chad Thomas, a standout defensive end from Miami who is committed to the Hurricanes.

"We are really excited about going back to Florida for a game," Strong said. "The south Florida area . . . is crucial for us building this program."

U of L defensive line coach Clint Hurtt also came from Miami. He was a player and coach there and was involved in the recent NCAA investigation there. Hurtt was given a two-year show cause punishment by the NCAA for its findings.
