For many of the players on the U of L roster, it was an opportunity to defeat a hometown team and further validate their decision to become a Cardinal over a Hurricane.
More than two dozen Cardinals hail from South Florida creating an on-the-field atmosphere with a lot of back and forth talking amongst the two sides. U of L cornerback Charles Gaines was one of many that shared words across the line the scrimmage.
"There was a lot of talking," Gaines said. "There was a lot of players on their side that we knew from playing against them in high school and some of the coaches we knew from being at camps. The talking is over now, they got a quiet ride home."
Gaines, who had 3 tackles and a pass breakup in the win, was quick to credit the game plan created by the coaching staff during bowl preparation.
"It was an outstanding win," he said. "We came out as a team, played as a team and listened to what our coaches wanted to do."
"Coach was on us all week about tackling, reading our assignments and reading the splits. We came and used what we worked on all week and that let us come out with a victory."
As he prepared to hop on the team bus following the game, Gaines had one more comment to share - Louisville is ready to compete in its new league.
"To be honest, I feel like we're ready for the ACC."
The receiver turned corner completed the 2013 season as the team's leader with 5 interceptions and 7 pass breakups.
