Florida DB lands U of L offer; will visit

University of Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino and his staff have offered Merritt Island, Fla., defensive back Shaq Jones and the South Alabama commitment says he will visit the Cardinals. Cardinal Authority spoke with Jones about his recruitment.

Merritt Island, Fla., defensive back Shaquille Jones heard a few times from the previous staff at the University of Louisville.

But it wasn't until last week - with the new staff at U of L - that Jones started to get serious interest from the Cardinals.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Jones said U of L coaches have been in contact, offered him a scholarship and wants him to visit.

A commitment to South Alabama since June, Jones said he "was very excited" about a "really good offer" from U of L. He plans on making a visit this weekend or next weekend.

"Yes, I will visit," Jones said. "I will visit for sure. They were in contact a little since my junior year. It was good to hear from them."

Jones had two interceptions as a senior and six for his career at Merritt Island Senior. He helped his team to an 11-1 record before losing in the quarterfinals of the Class 5-A state playoffs in the Sunshine State.

Jones runs a 4.45 40-yard dash, has a 37-inhc vertical and squats 315 pounds.

He's being recruited by Todd Grantham, the new defensive coordinator at U of L.
