Florida safety is 'going to be a Cardinal'

Hialeah, Fla., Champagnat Catholic safety Michael Johnson is solid on his commitment to the University of Louisville after last weekend's official visit. Johnson will sign next Wednesday with the Cardinals.

Hialeah, Fla., Champagnat Catholic three-star safety Michael Johnson has other schools trying to get involved in his recruitment.

But after last weekend's visit to Louisville, the longtime Cardinals' commitment is "done" with the process and is a "solid" commitment to U of L, according to his high school coach.

"The new staff did a great job of recruiting him and he loved the school," coach Mike Tunsil said. "He had friends up there and he's going to be a Cardinal."

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Johnson is former teammates with current U of L freshman safety Chucky Williams and knows several other players from South Florida on the roster.

Tunsil said the new staff was back at Champagnat Catholic, the Class 2-A Florida State champions, on Wednesday and is showing some interest in some younger kids.

U of L is interested in '15 wide receiver Steven Claude and '15 defensive back Gerald Robinson. The Cardinals are also starting to show interest in 2016 offensive lineman Okeke Valentine (6-7, 280).
