The University of Louisville baseball team opened weekend play with a 6-2 victory over Toledo at Jim Patterson Stadium

The University of Louisville baseball team opened the third weekend of the season on the winning side, defeating visiting Toledo 6-2 at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The Cardinals (7-2) received 6 innings of work from junior lefty Joe Filomeno, who struck out 5 while only allowing 2 runs on 4 hits to pick up his first victory of the season. Freshman Mason Richardson provided 1.1 innings of one hit relief and fellow newcomer Robert Strader struck out two in 1.2 innings to collect his first career save.

Senior Jeff Gardner drove in three runs, including a two-run home run – his second of the season - in the 3rd inning. Cole Strugeon and Zack Lucas both had multi-hit outings to fuel an afternoon that saw the Cardinals total 10 hits.

The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host 17th-ranked Indiana.
