Facing visiting Toledo on Saturday evening, U of L junior righthander Jared Ruxer threw a career-best 11 strikeouts and picked up a win in the Cardinals 8-2 victory over the Rockets at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Ruxer tossed six innings allowing two runs on four hits without issuing a walk and improved to 2-1 on the young season. The 11 strikeouts surpassed his previous career high of eight against Akron on Feb. 24, 2013 and are the most for a Louisville (8-3) pitcher since Jeff Thompson had 12 strikeouts against Villanova on May 4, 2013.
Filomeno gets first win
The Cardinals also hosted Toledo on Friday, defeating the Rockets 6-2. After two rough outings to start the season, junior Joe Filomeno collected his first victory of the season. The lefty matched a career-high with five strikeouts while surrendering only two unearned runs in a career-long outing of six innings.
Filomeno entered the contest with an ERA above 10, but he improved that by nearly five runs (1-0 with 5.93 ERA) by not allowing an earned run in six innings. He improved throughout his time on the mound, retiring the final 10 batters he faced and 13 of the last 14 overall.
