Padgett named Director of Basketball Ops

Rick Pitino announced that former University of Louisville center David Padgett would return to the program several weeks ago. But now Pitino says Padgett will fill a different role, naming him Director of Basketball Operations.

After spending two years at IUPUI as an assistant coach, David Padgett was announced several weeks ago by Rick Pitino as the new video assistant at the University of Louisville.

But now Padgett has a different title at his alma mater, being named Director of Basketball Operations. Pitino confirmed the title on Thursday night on WHAS-840 in Louisville.

"We're happy to have him back," Pitino said of Padgett, noting he can't do on-court teaching as the Ops guy but has a key role with a number of aspects of the program.

Padgett was a captain for the Cardinals during his time as a player, leaving U of L in 2008 after three years as a captain and starter. He was named All-Big East Conference as a senior.

Padgett left as the No. 2 ranked player all-time in school history in field-goal percentage and was one of the more popular U of L players in recent history.

He played in Spain and then returned for one year as an assistant strength coach at U of L before being hired at IUPUI.

Now, he's back at U of L. He replaces Andre McGee, the former U of L player who took an assistant coaching job at UMKC under former U of L assistant coach Kareem Richardson.
