Athlete Picks Up #5
Texas State has been active in recruiting the South. Multiple offers have gone out both in Alabama and Mississippi. You can chalk up another one for the Magnolia State. Trey Smith, an athlete from Madison Central High School was recently offered by the staff. "Texas State offered last week. Coach English called and we were having a conversation, he brought it to my attention that they offered. I really appreciate the opportunity," said Smith. The Bobcats are Smith's fifth offer. Louisville, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, and Mississippi State have all offered the Mississippi athlete. Originally Trey is from Texas. He lived in the DFW area and is a native Texan. His father, Jimmy Smith, had a stellar NFL career as a wide receiver where he earned Pro-Bowl and All Pro honors. After his playing days the elder Smith and family settled down in his hometown of Jackson, Mississippi and that's how Trey was transplanted to the south. "I was born in Texas. After I graduate my family and I are talking about moving back to Texas. I'm from Dallas. That's a plus for Texas State. I'd like to be closer to my family," said Smith. So with his father at his side, Trey does have someone who he can lean on and look to for advice. "He's been telling me it's my decision. Telling me what to look at, key pointers for success in helping me where I want to be," said Smith. Trey has already visited Texas, Louisiana Lafayette, Florida State, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. He plans on taking a bunch more of visits this summer and Texas State could be one of them. "I've been thinking about visiting San Marcos. My mom wants to see it. I've never been, but I would really like to get down there and see what it's like," said Smith. The staff is recruiting him as an athlete. They like him either at running back or wide receiver. His 6'1" 205lb frame could fit either spot. At a local combine he recently ran a 4.6 for his forty time. He currently remains open to see what other options come his way the rest of the spring and summer. Once he gets a better idea, then he'll start to sit down and narrow his choices.
