U of L baseball: Weekly notebook

Here's Cardinal Authority's weekly notebook of items surrounding the University of Louisville baseball program. The Cardinals are headed to Clearwater, Fla., for the AAC Tournament.


With less than a week until the NCAA Tournament field is selected, the University of Louisville baseball team is still fighting to host an NCAA regional.

The Cardinals are 43-13 and won the American Athletic Conference regular-season league title. U of L is No. 20 in the RPI ratings and ranked among the top 15 in all the human polls.

"I just want us to go there and play good baseball," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "We can't worry about anything but what we can control and that's playing good baseball."

PerfectGame.org has the Cardinals as one of the 16 hosts for a regional in its new NCAA Tournament projections, while Baseball America as he Cardinals' as the first team on the outside among those hoping to host.

It appears heading into the week of conference tournaments that U of L, LSU and Houston are battling for one of the last projected spots.


U of L has won 16 of the past 18 games and will open play in the AAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon against Memphis.

The top-seeded Cardinals are in Pool A with No. 4 seed Rutgers, No. 5 seed South Florida and No. 8 seed Memphis. The other pools includes Central Florida, Houston, UConn and Temple.

Sophomore Kyle Funkhouser (11-2) is expected to get the start against Memphis in the opener. U of L will play USF on Friday at 3 and then play Rutgers on Saturday at 3.

The winner of Pool A will play the winner of Pool B on Sunday at noon in the title game.

The tournament is being played at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.


Funkhouser has accepted an invitation to compete for a roster spot on the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.

After U of L's season ends, Funkhouser will participate in the team's training camp starting June 19. The 29-man roster will be announced on June 29. He's the seventh U of L player invited to try out for the Collegiate National team.

Funkhouser leads the Cardinals with his 11-2 record and 1.74 ERA in 14 weekend starts this season. In 93.0 innings pitched, he has 92 strikeouts, while opposing batters are hitting just .202 against him.
