Jeff Walz hopes to bolster his programs post presence and is looking at Erin DeGrate of Waco (Tex.) La Vega High School's Erin DeGrate. A 2015 Top 100 player, DeGrate is a 6-foot-5, athletic wide body that has become a priority target for nearly every elite program in the nation.
As a junior she posted multiple 30/30 games in points and rebounds, while helping lead her school to a perfect 35-0 season and the 3A state title.
"Erin hasn't always been this great at dominating a game," said her AAU coach Jamarius Byrd. "She has worked extremely hard over the years in developing her skill set. She's always had the height and she's always had the mass, but never quite the skill set to go with it, so she's put in a tremendous amount of work in developing her skill set."
Her continued development has fueled her popularity among college coaches. In addition to the Cardinals, Baylor, Florida State, Kansas, Michigan State, Northwestern, Texas, Texas A&M, and Washington comprise her list of favorites.
"I guess what makes Erin so special is that she is a very explosive player, with a lot of power and athleticism," Byrd told Cardinal Authority. "That gives her a great asset going into the collegiate level. In high school she is now dominating things."
The in-home visit from Walz a few months ago, along with a recent unofficial visit to Louisville, has spiked DeGrate's interest in the Cardinals program.
"From the day that he walked into her home, for her home visit, Erin absolutely fell in love," Byrd explained. "She really likes his personality, with how he representing his program, with the coaching staff and all the assistants. She had an opportunity two weeks ago to spend time with the team and she absolutely fell in love with the team as well."
"She has every program in the country vying for her services, but there's something about Coach Walz and his personality that really struck with her."
DeGrate anticipates trimming her list of favorites to five on August 1 and with an official visit in the works for Louisville, the Cardinals are certain to make the cut.
