With less than a month until college football practice begins, three University of Louisville players were in the news on Monday.
Gaines was named to the Paul Hornung Award watch list for the country's most versatile player, while Mauldin was on the Bednarik list as the top Defensive Player in college football and Parker was named to the Maxwell Award list as the College Football Player of the Year.
Gaines is one of the fastest and most electrifying players on the roster. A first-team All-AAC performer, Gaines scored off an interception, fumble recovery and punt return last season. He started in 10 games at cornerback and led the Cardinals with five interceptions.
Mauldin, who missed spring practice with an injury but is expected back at full go to start fall camp, finished last season with 9.5 sacks. He was a second team all-conference selection a year ago when he recorded a career-high 40 tackles and 12.0 tackles for loss.
Parker is one of the top players in the country and caught 55 passes for 885 yards and tied a school record with 12 touchdown receptions last season. For his career, Parker has 113 receptions for 1,920 yards and 28 touchdowns, which is the third-most in school history. Parker is averaging 16.9 yards a reception during his first three seasons.
Several other awards watch lists are set to be released later this week.
