But Samuel said he hit it off right away with Petrino and then "just loved," the campus and facilities at U of L during a visit.
So, the 5-foot-8, 180-pound Samuel decided the time was right to make a commitment to the Cardinals. He became the 12th commit in the Class of 2015 for U of L.
The staff was great, the campus was great," Samuel said. "I just loved it. I think it was perfect, so I wanted to be there.
"Plus, I like the offense that coach Petrino runs and the way he's going to use me."
Samuel said Petrino told him of plans to use him as a slot receiver, some at running back and also as a kick returner on special teams.
"I can be a playmaker," Samuel said. "And that's what I want to do at Louisville. It should be great because of the offense. I like playing in a high-powered offense."
Samuel picked the Cardinals over Auburn, South Carolina and Florida State and others. He committed while he was still on campus.
"It was great," he said. "I'm excited to get to be able to play for (Petrino)."
As a junior, Samuel had 781 rushing yards, 452 receiving yards and 24 total touchdowns.
