Mattingly among local visitors for opener

Louisville Male quarterback Davis Mattingly is among a large group of prospects from the Louisville Metro area planning to visit U of L for the season opener against Miami on Monday night

Among the impressive group of recruits expected to visit the University of Louisville for the Cardinals season-opener against Miami is one of the top quarterbacks in the Bluegrass State.

Senior Davis Mattingly guided Louisville Male to the Kentucky 6A State Semifinals last fall and finished among the state's top passers with over 3,100 yards and 27 touchdowns. He completed 63 percent of his 440 attempts with just 7 interceptions.

Following a breakout junior season, college coaches are keeping an eye on the 6-foot-4, 200-pound prospect.

“Recruiting is going about the same as it was during the off season,” Mattingly explained. “I'm still staying in contact with the coaches and I'm still receiving mail and other interest from them.”

Among the schools expressing an interest are Cincinnati, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami (Oh.), Purdue and Western Kentucky.

Mattingly anticipates visiting many of the schools showing an interest, starting with the hometown Cardinals on Monday night.

“I don't have any planned out yet,” he said. “I am attending U of L's game against Miami on Monday, but that is the only definite one I have planned.”

Mattingly led Male, which is ranked No. 18 in the latest Top 50 High School Rankings (link), to a season-opening 49-3 victory over Floyd Central (Ind.). Removed early in the game due to the score, he completed 7 of 9 passes for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Male teammate, wide receiver Keion Wakefield will also be visiting. Wakefield, a 2016 prospect, currently holds scholarship offers from Cincinnati and Kentucky.
