The University of Louisville held it's second and final public scrimmage on Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center, with Montrezl Harrell's 24 points leading the White team to an 89-86 victory.
There were a number of promising performances, for both squads, in the game.
Shaqquan Aaron displayed why he's drawn comparisons to former Cardinal Francisco Garcia while scoring 18 points for the winning team. Chinanu Onuaku and Mangok Mathiang combined for 27 rebounds for the Red team. However, while the large new class of Cardinals are developing quickly, it has been the veterans that have proven that they are ready to perform at the needed level.
"I think we've got some good veterans, I don't think we've got a veteran team," U of L head coach Rick Pitino said after the game. "I think we've got a few veterans. That's the weakness of the team right now; we don't have enough veterans. But the guys we do have- Wayne, Montrezl, and our backcourt - they're really good basketball players. The four of those guys have been through it. They know what it is to win conference championships, they know what it is to go to Final Fours. The problem is there's only four of them. They're going to play, unless they're in foul trouble, they're going to play the bulk of the minutes."
Who will step up and fill out the starting rotation? Who will be the first few players off the bench? Those questions may be a little clearer following the final Red - White scrimmage, but they remain fluid decisions to be made.
The Cardinals will return to practice in preparation for facing a true opponent for the first time this season when they host Barry College for an exhibition on Saturday, November 1.
