University of Louisville associate head coach Roger Williams has worked with a lengthy list of impressive arms since becoming the Cardinals pitching coach in 2007. Williams has tutored 20 pitchers that have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft and has produced 9 All-Americans.
Williams current ace, righty Kyle Funkhouser is the latest Cardinal All-American on the mound and is projected as high draft pick as he enters his junior season at Louisville.
Funkhouser established a new U of L single season record for wins, finishing 13-3 with a 1.94 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 2014. Following the team's second consecutive appearance in the College World Series and with his teammates playing in the summer leagues during the off season, Funkhouser was part of the rotation for the U.S. Collegiate National Team.
Rated as the top pro prospect on the National Team by MLB.com, Funkhouser lead Team USA with 36 strikeouts and posted a 1.27 ERA in 28.1 innings of work.
Due in part to his work with Team USA, Funkhouser's work during fall ball was limited and he made his only appearance on the mound on the final day of the Pizza Bowl. With a large group of MLB scouts on hand to watch him throw, Funkhouser tossed three strong innings to help his team claim the victory.
