It's not often that former University of Louisville great Darrell Griffith is passed in the school's record books, but that's exactly what happened on Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center.
In the process of recording his 15th career double-double, junior forward Montrezl Harrell had four dunks in the Cardinals 82-57 win over FIU and moved a spot higher on the program's career dunk list, one ahead of Dr. Dunkenstein.
“I didn't know that,” Harrell told Cardinal Authority following the win. “It's a great accomplishment to be on a list with someone who has the name Dr. Dunkenstein. That tells you where a lot of his points came from.”
The Tarboro, N.C., native, now with 157 career dunks, is within a game or two of reaching the 162 recorded by Pervis Ellison.
“It's a great honor and I'll just keep moving forward and hoping that I get the number one spot before this year is over,” he said.
Harrell established a new U of L single season record with 97 dunks last season, which is 28 more than the next closest performance. The 43 dunks he totaled during his freshman season ranks eighth.
With 858 career points, the All-American is also quickly nearing the program's 1000-point club.
