University of Louisville junior righty Kyle Funkhouser is set to be one of the top pitchers in the nation in 2015 and on Friday was selected as a preseason First Team Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Funkhouser earned Second Team Louisville Slugger All-America honors in 2014 after finishing 13-3 overall with a 1.94 ERA and 122 strikeouts. He also picked up First Team All-America by ABCA, Second Team All-America by NCBWA and Third Team All-American by Baseball America and Perfect Game.
Funkhouser is 18-4 on the mound with a 2.01 ERA and 177 strikeouts in 175.0 innings and 24 total starts during his first two years on the Cardinals staff.
Following a trip to the College World Series, Funkhouser was selected to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, where he finished with a team-high 36 strikeouts in six appearances and five starts.
The Cardinals, who finished 50-17 overall last season, will open the 2015 season at the Clearwater (Fla.) Tournament against Alabama State (Feb. 13), USF (Feb. 14) and Cal State Fullerton (Feb. 15) at Bright House Field. Louisville’s 33-game home slate at Jim Patterson Stadium is set to begin on Feb. 18 against Eastern Kentucky.
