Louisville football: Recruiting notebook

Here are a few notebook items involving the University of Louisville football program and some recruiting efforts, including All-Star games and new targets.

Jaylen Smith HEADED FOR ALL-STAR GAME

Pascagoula, Miss., High School wide receiver Jaylen Smith, who committed to the University of Louisville in early August, will play in an All-Star game on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Smith - a three-star prospect - will compete for the South team in the 66th annual Bernard Blackwell All-Star Classic North vs. South game in Gulfport, Miss.

Smith figures to be one of the most explosive players in the game.

As a junior, Smith finished with 33 catches for 724 yards - 21.9 yards a catch - and nine touchdowns. He was hampered a bit this season with his team using four different quarterbacks during the season but still has 31 catches for 435 yards and seven TDs.

Smith is expected to make a mark early at U of L in special teams. He averaged close to 35 yards a return on kickoffs and 20 on punts as a senior.

Lamar Jackson IN Florida ALL-STAR GAME

U of L quarterback commitment Lamar Jackson, who is one of the top members of the Cardinals' recruiting class, will be participating in an All-Star game also on Saturday.

Jackson will play for the South squad in the 60th Annual Florida Athletic Coaches Association North-South Football All-Star Classic in Orlando.

The game is slated for 4 p.m. and is televised on Fox Sports Florida.

TWO FUTURE CARDS IN SHRINE BOWL

Two future U of L players will participate in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas All-Star game on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.

Defensive back Jaire Alexander, who will be one of seven players to enroll next month at U of L and has already signed with the Cardinals, will be playing for the North Carolina team.

South Carolina Mr. Football Matt Colburn, a running back from Dutch Fork High School, will be playing on the South Carolina side. Colburn has committed to U of L.

CARDS OFFER 2018 QUARTERBACK

Louisville was the second offer for 2018 quarterback Joey Gatewood, whose first offer came from Utah.

Gatewood is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback from Jacksonville, Fla., Bartram Trail High School. He's also heard from Cincinnati and South Florida among others.
