U of L's Katie George wins Miss Kentucky

University of Louisville volleyball standout Katie George was named Miss Kentucky on Sunday night, competing in a beauty pageant for the first time. She beat out 16 other contestants and will represent the Bluegrass State this summer in the Miss USA contest.

University of Louisville volleyball setter Katie George can add another page to her resume after being named Miss Kentucky USA 2015 on Sunday night.

George, an All-ACC volleyball performer, has been one of the athletes who has been the face of the U of L athletic department in recent years. She's done internships with local and national media outlets and has done commentary on games for CardsTV.

It was the first time she had competed in a pageant.

The field she beat was made of contestants from counties all over Kentucky counties. She beat out 16 other contestants.

George, who is the captain of U of L volleyball team, was an AVCA All-Region selection, an All-ACC first-team performer and started in every match of her junior year. She led the team with 1163 assists (10.20/set) and aces with 35. She was second on the team with 301 digs (2.64/set) and registered 14 double-doubles.

"I can't tell you what happened on Sunday night," George said. "It's been crazy."

The preliminary competition on Saturday featured a private interview with the judges before Sunday's swimsuit competition and evening-gown division, as well as an on-stage question in front of a live audience.
