The University of Louisville only scored 13 points in the first half and fell behind 24-13 at halftime only to make a game of it at Virginia on Saturday night.
The Cardinals ended up outshooting the Cavaliers but still fell 52-47 before a rowdy crowd at John Paul Jones Arena.
Malcolm Brogdon scored 15 points for No. 3 Virginia (21-1, 9-1) as the Cavaliers took a two-game lead in ACC play.
Terry Rozier scored 16 points and Montrezl Harrell 12 for the Cardinals (19-4, 7-3), who had a four-game winning streak snapped. The Cardinals trailed by as much as 13 in the game but cut it to 50-47 on Chris Jones' basket with 18 seconds left.
Jones missed a free throw and then Brogdon hit two at the other end to seal it.
Louisville didn't score for the final 10:32 of the first half and had the scoreless streak extend to just over 12 minutes before scoring again.
