Handsome Tanielu had a lot of interest from colleges after a solid prep career at Waianae (Hi.) High School. But Tanielu was missing something else.
"I didn't have the grades," he said. "A lot of schools would come look at me and then look at my grades and that was it. I didn't have any grades."
The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Tanielu spent the two years after high school on a Latter Day Saints mission. He spent the two years in North Carolina.
Tanielu went back home to Hawaii briefly before option to attend Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, to try and get his college football career on track.
And so far, it's worked well.
Tanielu has offers from Kansas and Louisville, landing one from the Cardinals this weekend, and is getting serious interest from some others, including USC, Utah and BYU.
"It's picked up a lot," Tanielu said. "I've had a lot of calls. The coaches at Snow said before I came here that I would get recruited. The first four games I didn't start, but then it all started going good for me. It's what every kid dreams about."
The interest from Louisville started two weeks ago and Tanielu said he's been on the internet trying to research the program and Bobby Petrino.
"I know they had new coaches last year and they did great," Tanielu said. "I know they had three first-round draft picks last year and 11 guys in the NFL Combine. I want to go to a place that can get me to the next level and that's a place there."
As a freshman last season, Tanielu played the three-tech spot at Snow.
Tanielu is on pace to finish up his academic work in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2015 football season.
