Pitino will visit top guard in Vegas

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino will meet with a top guard prospect - Derrykc Thornton - today in Las Vegas. Thornton is the No. 5 prospect in the Class of 2016 but Pitino will talk to him about reclassifying into the '15 class.

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino still has a couple of spots open on his roster for the 2015-16 season.

Pitino and his staff are in the mix for other fifth-year senior transfers and high school players. On Thursday, Pitino is in Las Vegas trying to talk another high school standout into taking him up on an offer to reclassify.

Findlay Prep guard Derryck Thornton is ranked as the No. 5 player in the Class of 2016 by Scout.com but Pitino will talk with Thornton about joining the Cardinals now. Duke and several others have also been recruiting Thornton for the '15 class.

Thornton and his father have been receptive to the idea more in recent weeks. He had originally said he was not likely to reclassify.

He pared his list to 10 programs last fall: Duke, Kentucky, Michigan, Louisville, Arizona, California, USC, Miami, UNLV and N.C. State.

Scout.com national analyst Josh Gershon said in a message board posting on Thornton that Louisville has "made up ground here but still have work to do."
