Louisville baseball the No. 3 seed in NCAA

The University of Louisville baseball team is the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will open play on Friday night at Jim Patterson Stadium against Morehead State. The Cardinals are also in a bracket with No. 2 Bradley and No. 3 Michigan.

The University of Louisville baseball team not only gets a weekend home for the postseason but the Cardinals are the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cardinals are hosting No. 2 Bradley, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Morehead State in the regional starting on Friday night. It's a double elimination weekend.

The winner of the Louisville Regional will face the winner of the Fullerton Reional the following weekend in a Super Regional. U of L would host of they win.

"It's great for our program," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "It's a lot of hard work to get here and is a long season. It's great for our program."

The opening game of the regional will be Michigan vs. Bradley at 2 p.m. on Friday with U of L playing Morehead State - the top-ranked hitting team in the nation at .335 - on Friday at 6. The game on Saturday and Sunday are at 2 and 4.

A game will be played on Monday, if necessary, at 6 o'clock.

Louisville is trying to make it back to the College World Series for a third consecutive season after winning a Super Regional at Vanderbilt two years ago and beating Kennesaw State at home last season to make it.

U of L has also hosted an NCAA regional in 2009, '10, '13 and '14 while also hosting the Super Regional in '07 and '14. The Cardinals have made eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament in nine seasons under McDonnell.

This season, the Cardinals dominated the ACC with a league-best 25-5 mark. The Cardinals won the ACC title and went 1-2 last week in the conference tournament.

The Cardinals were 25-6 at home this season and own a 273-88 record (.756 winning percentage) all-time at the ballpark, which opened in April 2005.
