Pitino gets contract extension

University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich is going to keep Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino around a long time. The two agreed on a four-year contract extension to Pitino's deal that now takes him out to 2025-26.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said jokingly it was his goal to keep Rick Pitino around as the U of L basketball coach until the Hall of Famer dies.

Pitino smiled and said, "I might not be alive," after the two announced a contract extension for Pitino on Tuesday afternoon.

Pitino and Jurich have agreed to a contract extension through 2025-26, which adds four years to his previous contract. The new deal includes $7.5 million in retention bonuses that kick in every three years beginning in 2017.

The salary for Pitino will increase from $4.48 million in 2015-16 to $5.093 million in 2016-17. It will stay the same through 2026 but he's eligible for a $500,000 bonus if the Cardinals wi nthe national title and $250,000 for academic success.

"Any time we can lock up a Hall of Fame coach, a great coach and an incredible asset to our university, we want to take full advantage of it," Jurich said.

Pitino would be 73 at the end of the contract and said he asked Jurich "do you really think I will be alive that long."
