Cannon a key safety for Louisville

Cardinal Authority is counting down the days until the University of Louisville football team starts the season on Sept. 5 against Auburn in the Chick-Fil-A Classic at the Georgia Dome. It's 69 days before the game and we look at how safety Zykiesis Cannon can be a big boost for the Cardinals' secondary.

Zykiesis Cannon played in nine games last season as a true freshman for the University of Louisville football team.

But his role was mainly on special teams.

Now with so many losses in the secondary, the 6-foot, 195-pound Cannon could be a key for the Cardinals defense this season.

”He’s a guy who had a good spring for us,” safeties coach Greg Brown said. “We still have a long way to go with a lot of guys, but he showed improvement.”

Cannon, who had four tackles last season, showed an ability to help in the run game and also good ball skills in the spring.

A former three-star prospect from Mauldin, S.C., Cannon and Chucky Williams will battle for playing time opposite of Josh Harvey-Clemons at safety.

”He’ll be a good one for us,” Brown said.
