U of L football: Recruiting notebook

Cardinal Authority has a notebook of items related to recruiting and the University of Louisville football program. Here are a few updates on some prospects:

Jackson, Miss., Callaway High School safety Dwayne Pickett Jr., was on campus in early June and camped with the Cardinals.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Pickett is a Class of 2017 target for the Cardinals and is also hearing from Kentucky, Southern Mississippi and Texas Southern.

”They liked my aggressiveness and how I broke on the ball,” Pickett said. “I think I did pretty good when I was at camp there. I liked Louisville a lot.

”But it’s just early and I’m just getting started I hope.”

Ryle High School quarterback Tanner Morgan has been making his way to several camps in recent weeks, including Louisville.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Morgan has offers from Wake Forest, U of L and Cincinnati and is hearing from a lot of other schools. He has also camped at Illinois and Purdue already this summer.

But he said after spending some time at U of L he “loves” the Cardinals.

”I think I performed at a high level (at U of L),” Morgan said. “I loved the camp and the way it was run. I really like coach (Garrick) McGee and coach (Bobby) Petrino. I really like the offense at Louisville.”

Morgan said he’s a long way from a decision but the way U of L’s offense is designed really “suits my interests.”

Morgan, who played his first two seasons of high school ball at Hazard, threw for 2,536 yards and 31 touchdowns with just six interceptions last season.

Atlanta Grady senior safety Marlon Character has a ton of offers, including Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Alabama and Arkansas.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Character was on U of L’s campus recently and spent time talking defense with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

”He’s a really good coach and he has a plan for me,” Character said. “I really liked him a lot. I really enjoyed Louisville a lot.

”I am very interested.”
