A look at a few of the targets the University of Louisville basketball staff will be watching this week in the first of three evaluation periods, which begins on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The staff will be in several places and will be watching a lot of targets. Here are a few names to remember:
Kenny Johnson and Ralph Willard will be on the road the entire time, but commit V.J. King might end up being the best recruiter - or has the potential to be the best. Markelle Fultz and Kameron McGusty have both said King has talked to them about playing with him at U of L. King is on the Nike circuit and will be around a lot of other potential U of L targets.
Best chance for a commitment
This was an easy one last year. Deng Adel appeared to be ready to pop as a commitment and he did after the first evaluation period. I think this one will be tougher, but if coach Pitino and the others really like Kameron McGusty then he will get the heat turned up even more and he could end up being the second member of the class.
Best point guard
McGusty and Fultz can play the point but I think are more combo guards, while De'Aaron Fox is a big-time lead guard and would be a huge, huge get for the Cardinals. His recruitment is open I would expect him to get a lot of attention this week.
Best big man
Well, it's not Abdul Ado for me. He hasn't improved since last season and I don't expect a lot of attention from the staff. Bam Adebayo and Dewan Huell are both really good and comparable - not games but levels - but I think at this point I'd take Huell. He's talented and a little more versatile at this point.
Best fringe guy
BABC standout Bruce Brown could go from fringe to top target this week. Remember, this time last summer Donovan Mitchell was just a fringe guy. Brown is only 6-3 but he's strong and very good on both ends. Really like his game and think he would fit in with the Pitino style. Can't imagine coach P isn't going to love him.
Best to forget
I'd say this is the category for Dennis Smith. He's a total stud but appears to be headed elsewhere and I don't believe the staff will spend too much time on him.
Best not to forget
Javin DeLaurier just picked up an offer from the Cardinals last week and he's a kid with new interest from the staff. He's a 6-9 prospect and has a lot of potential. Has some connections to Kenny Johnson, so let's watch close.
Best chance for a surprise
Don't be shocked for us to report a few new names the staff might take a peek at this week. One is likely going to be Waterbury, Conn., Sacred Heart guard Mustapha Heron. He's one of the top 20 players in the class and the Cards might be able to sneak in the mix.
Enjoy the week folks, I'll be bringing you a lot of good stuff from the road.
