Burgess, Rankins honored again

Cardinal Authority is counting down the days until the University of Louisville football team starts the season on Sept. 5 against Auburn in the Chick-Fil-A Classic at the Georgia Dome. It's 53 days before the game and here's a look at some more

It was more honors on Tuesday for James Burgess and Sheldon Rankins.

The two University of Louisville defensive standouts were tabbed to more watch lists for top players in college football. The two will be the U of L representatives next week at ACC media day.

Burgess, a senior linebacker, was tabbed to the Butkus Award and the Lombardi Award, while senior defensive end Rankins was named to the Lombardi Award watch list.

Burgess had previously been named to the Nagurski Award watch list, while Rankins was selected to both the Nagurski and Bednarik Award watch lists.

Burgess has been a two-year starter for the Cardinals, totaling 71 tackles in each of those seasons. As a junior last season, Burgess was third on the team in tackles, recording a career-best 11 in a 23-17 loss at Clemson and 10 in the Belk Bowl defeat versus Georgia.

Rankins was named third team all-ACC last season in helping the Cardinals rank in the top-10 nationally against the run and in total defense. He posted a career-best 13.5 tackles for loss and a team-high 8.0 quarterback sacks.
