Kelsey, Burgess aiming to be the best

Cardinal Authority is counting down the days until the University of Louisville football team starts the season on Sept. 5 against Auburn in the Chick-Fil-A Classic at the Georgia Dome. It's 32 days before the game and we take a look a the linebacker duo of James Burgess and Keith Kelsey

As the University of Louisville prepares to open fall camp this week, the storyline, at multiple positions on both sides of the ball, focuses on the ability to replace a multitude of departed players. One of the few positions where experience is high and uncertainty low is at middle linebacker.

Returning to man the middle are senior James Burgess and junior Keith Kelsey, a duo that finished among the top three tacklers on the team, combining for 158 total stops.

“We call ourselves the Bash Brothers,” Burgess said during the ACC Kickoff.

Choosing a nickname based on the 'Smash Brothers', the Golden State Warrior teammates Steph Curry and Klay Thomas who have combined to set multiple NBA records, is a bold statement for the two Cardinal defenders.

“We do a lot of hitting, so we're the Bash Bros,” Burgess added, further explaining that he and Kelsey are able to improve their performance due to the others presence.

“The way that we play off each other, and feed off each other. Stuff that he lacks, I can pick up on and stuff that I lack on, he can pick up. We have a good relationship. He's a good friend of mine. He's always willing to learn and he's never been a stubborn person.”

The only question about the the pair is, just how good can they be? They have impressive bloodlines, as both of their fathers played linebacker in college and professionally.

“They're good,” said Cardinals head coach Bobby Petrino. “It's always good when the positions name themselves and take pride in it. It's something that I like and encourage. They have to live up to it.”

The two anticipate living up to the 'hype' frequently this year and have the goal of becoming the best linebacker tandem not only in the talented ACC, but across the nation.

“We have our own celebration we are going to have this year,” Burgess said. “We feel like we are going to be the best linebacker unit in the country.”
