The University of Louisville defense finished the 2014 season ranked among the nation's best in multiple categories. However, despite their high level of play, there were moments and areas that can be improved upon and that's the mindset of this year's group.
Following a season of becoming more accustomed to defensive coordinator Todd Grantham's 3-4 defense, plus a stronger depth chart, the 2015 bunch are preparing for the upcoming season with some lofty goals.
"We have high goals for the defense," said senior defensive lineman Pio Vatuvei. "We set ourselves up for high expectations. As a defense, we want to lead the country in every category from rush yards, to passing yards and sacks. We just have to get after it."
Last season saw the Cardinals finish sixth in the nation in total defense, good for second best in the ACC. Louisville's run defense was tenth nationally and third in the ACC. Defensive line coach L.D. Scott agreed that the goals are even higher for 2015.
"That's our expectation," said Scott. "We expect to be the best run defense in the ACC. We were close last year. This year we just need to compete better."
Senior defensive tackle DeAngelo Brown, who has been apart of some very good defensive squads during his Cardinal career, believes that while the goals are high, they are attainable.
"It is," said Brown. "I think if we come to work each and everyday, and if we put our mind to it, we can do it."
