Louisville lands commitment No. 19

The University of Louisville football staff landed verbal commitment No. 19 on Thursday night, picking up a commit from Clinton, Miss., safety Lamarques Thomas. He picked U of L over Mississippi State, Mississippi and Missouri.

The University of Louisville doesn't play on Thursday night until next week, but the Cardinals are already a winner on that night this fall after landing a big commitment late Thursday.

Clinton, Miss., High School safety LaMarques Thomas picked the Cardinals and became the 19th verbal commitment, choosing U of L over Mississippi State, Mississippi and Missouri.

The hard-hitting safety had a dozen other offers and is ranked as the No. 5 safety prospect in Mississippi and the No. 109 safety in the country. He's a three-star prospect.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Thomas was called "one of the hardest hitting defensive backs we have seen this season," in a Scout.com report on his game in May.

Thomas' nickname is 'Baby D' and it's been one that's been with him a long time.

"That name came a long time ago when I was playing for the Jackson Redskins," Thomas told Scout.com earlier this year. "My mama knew my coach from before when she was younger. Everybody calls her D, so my coach started calling me Baby D and it just stayed with me. It's been a good nickname too."

Thomas is commitment No. 19, including three potential secondary players, in the Class of 2016 for Louisville.
