Louisville is making its sixth straight bowl appearance this season, marking the 20th bowl post season bowl for the program. It's the 12th in the last 15 seasons. The Cardinals have amassed an overall record of 9-9-1 in its bowl appearances. It is the first appearance in the Music City Bowl for both Louisville and Texas A&M. This will be the 11th time that U of L has been unranked in the Associated Press Top 25 at the time of the game, with the Cardinals just 2-7-1 in those outings.
The Music City Bowl will be the 37th post-season trip for Texas A&M, which has compiled an overall record of 17-19. The Aggies have won four consecutive bowl games, including a 45-37 over West Virginia in the 2014 Liberty Bowl. This will be the fourth meeting against an ACC school in its bowl history, with a current record of 1-2.
The Cardinals will be facing their third SEC opponent in bowl game, with victories over Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl and Florida in the 2012 Sugar Bowl, as well as a loss to Georgia in the 2014 Belk Bowl. The ACC has compiled an overall 7-6 record in the Music City Bowl, with six of those wins coming against SEC competition. The SEC has an 7-9 record in the game.
The Music City Bowl will be the fifth time that Louisville has gone bowling in the State of Tennessee, with all four as participants in the Liberty Bowl held in Memphis. The Cardinals are 3-1 in those games, with wins over Michigan State (1993), BYU (2001) and Boise State (2004). The lone loss was to Colorado State in 2000. The five bowl appearances in the Volunteer State are the most of any state for Louisville, with Florida next with four.
This bowl appearance also marks the fifth for Louisville with Bobby Petrino as head coach, which is second behind John L. Smith's six trips for most for a head coach in program history. U of L is 2-2 in bowl games under Petrino, with wins in the 2007 Orange Bowl and 2004 Liberty Bowl. A victory over Texas A&M will be Petrino's 100th career win. Petrino is 2-0 as a head coach in bowl games located in Tennessee, also winning the 2009 Liberty Bowl while at Arkansas. Petrino has an overall bowl record of 4-4.
When the Cardinals kickoff against the Aggies, it will be the second time that they have played at Nashville's Nissan Stadium. U of L defeated host Middle Tennessee State 44-17 at the facility during the 2006 regular season.
Louisville is 0-3 all-time against Texas A&M with all three games occurring between 1992-94. Bobby Petrino is 3-0 against the Aggies, with all victories coming while he was at Arkansas.
