Louisville coach Rick Pitino said junior Mangok Mathiang is not likely to return this season for the Cardinals

Louisville junior center Mangok Mathiang is not expected to return this season for a broken foot, according to U of L coach Rick Pitino. The Hall of Fame coach said Mathiang would likely sit out the final seven games and return next season.

University of Louisville junior center Mangok Mathiang was expected to return from a broken foot in the next week or so for the Cardinals. But on Friday, U of L coach Rick Pitino confirmed that's likely not going to happen.

Mathiang, a fourth-year junior for the Cardinals, has been sidelined since breaking his foot against Western Kentucky in December.

"I don't think I'm going to bring him back," said Pitino, noting Mathiang was "sore" when he worked out with trainer Fred Hina last week.

Pitino said he finds that "when you bring a player back sometimes, he hurts something else because he's compensating for his injury," Pitino said. "At this stage, we would definitely bring him back if we were going to the tournament.

"Now, it's in the best interest for Mangok not to come back."

Mathiang averaged 7.1 points and 5.7 rebounds a game in the first 10 games of the season.
