Cards high on Palacios' list

ITV RECRUITING EXCLUSIVE -- 6'8 Tello Palacios is still visiting family in his native Columbia, but Our Savior New American Head Coach Ron Stelzer gave ITV an update on the talented forward's recruitment on Wednesday afternoon.

Cards in good shape with Palacios

6'8 Tello Palacios of Our Savior New American High School in Centerreach, NY has been the forgotten man by many this summer. The native Colombian was absent from the summer shoe camps and AAU tournaments, instead returning to his native homeland to spend the summer months visiting his mother.

Palacios, a talented and versatile power forward, has long been one of University of Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino's top frontcourt prospects in the class of 2004. Last winter, Coach Pitino made several trips to evaluate Palacios in action and visited with talented forward at OSNA in April.

Following Pitino's visit with Tello in April, OSNA Head Coach Ron Stelzer said this about Palacios' feelings toward Coach Pitino and the Cardinal basketball progam, "He's very interested....Coach Pitino gave Tello an idea what he would do for him at the college level and how he could help him for the long term."

On Wednesday afternoon, Stelzer spoke with ITV and updated Palacios recruitment.

Asked whether Palacios had narrowed his list of college choices down to two schools, specifically Louisville and St.John's, Stelzer said he didn't believe that to be the case.

"I doubt it," Stelzer responded when asked if Palacios had narrowed his list down to two finalists. "He wants to take his time and listen to what all the schools have to offer."

Though Stelzer denied Palacios' list had been whittled down, he did add that Louisville is near the top of the list for Palacios' services and the Cards appear to be in strong position to land his services.

"I would think Louisville is in the top 3-5 schools on his list," Stelzer told ITV. "I'm guessing they would receive an official visit this fall."

Stelzer indicated that Palacios was scheduled to return to OSNA at the end of August and would sit down at that time and narrow the list down to 3-5 schools and begin to set up official visits with those programs making the cut.

When asked to name those programs likely to receive visits this fall other than Louisville, Stelzer declined to speculate on that aspect of Palacios' recruitment.

However, you can bet Florida, St. John's, Pittsburgh, UCLA, Iowa State, N.C. State, Illinois and Florida State will all be in the mix when Palacios narrows the list and decides where to make his visits. Each of the above schools made visits with Palacios last April at OSNA.

Palacios has been hampered by tendonitis in his knees since last season but has been feeling better of late.

"They're excellent right now," Stelzer said of Tello's knees. Stelzer added that Palacios spent much of the summer working with a trainer in Columbia to improve his skills and rehab his knees.
