Saturday afternoon, the Cards put the pads on for the first time and the intensity and action heated up.  Despite a short rain delay that halted practice for nearly 20 minutes, many fans braved the elements and remained to watch the Cards finish up their third practice of fall camp.

Here's our report from Saturday's practice.

Position Breakdown

QB  Stephon LeFors was solid and looks clearly implanted as the number one quarterback....Michael Bush is a phenomenal player and he will have an impact on the field...he was on target during Saturday's action and continued to complete tough passes over the middle of the field.

Bush and Coach Brohm

WR  JR Russell had his best practice of the week and caught several passes during skeleton drills...Broderick Clark struggled catching the wet ball on Saturday....Joshua Tinch was his usual self today catching everything thrown his direction...he has the hands on Deion Branch and the size of Terrell Owens.

TE    Ronnie Ghent looked good running after the catch and showed the knee is ready to go by making a leaping grab over the middle.

DL  The second team line during practice consisted of Ends Bobby Leffew and Matt Sanders, with Elvis Dumervil and Amobi Okoye at tackle.  Scott Lopez made a nice pass deflection at the line of scrimmage during simulated scrimmage action.

LB  Robert McCune was very active during contact drills.  Senior Rod Day had an interception off of a tipped Michael Bush pass...he also made a nice open field tackle during scrimmage action.

DB  CB Gavin Smart picked a Justin Rascati pass during the scrimmage.  Converted WR Antoine Harris is currently running second team at cornerback and is being used as the nickelback.  Harris nearly intercepted a Rascati pass during drills. Freshman William Gay intercepted Michael Bush during simulated scrimmage action.

K/P  Wade Tydlacka is punting the ball as good right now as he ever has...he's consistently driving the return men back to field his punts...freshman P Brent Moody had his best day punting and demonstrated why he was highly touted coming out of high school....Though Moody showed solid improvement the edge goes to Tydlacka.

News and Notes

Tight end Chad Jorgensen, a red-shirt freshman from San Marcos, TX, is not currently with the team...He's said to be taking time away from the program to handle personal issues...his status with the team is uncertain at this time....RB/S Michael Hobbs, a prospect from Alabama who is receiving interest from Alabama and Auburn, attended the fan event Saturday morning and withered a short rain storm in the afternoon while watching the Cardinals practice....As of early Saturday evening, Hobbs had not been offered a scholarship but would likely accept if one was extended...Hobbs and his family were impressed with the coaches, facilities and program....Hobbs is being recruited primarily as a safety....true freshman Brandon Sharp got a look as a punt returner during Saturday's practice....

Danny Muy
After struggling somewhat during the first two practices, freshman punter Brent Moody showed a great deal of improvement and punted the ball very well.....injured cornerback J.T. Haskins (shoulder) is expected to be back in pads for Sunday's practice.....6'4, 275 OT Danny Muy of Tallahasse Lincoln High School, made an unofficial visit to Louisville on Friday and Saturday....he attended Saturday's fan event before heading back home...Muy is considered one of the top linemen in the state of Florida this season....About 800 people attended Saturday's fan event at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.....Wade Tydlacka continues to punt well and boomed four straight 50+ yards during special teams drills....and that was with a punt rush.....The cameraman behind the south endzone probably didn't like K Nate Smith on Saturday....Smith sent several kicks square at the cameraman, almost nailing him on several occasions....

Scouts Seat

Transfer WR Antoine Sharp has some skills...he has good hands and has a good release from the line of scrimmage....Montrell Jones also has big time potential and ability...he's naturally gifted as a receiver, runs good routes and has excellent hands.....CB Gavin Smart has tremendous quickness and closes on the ball quickly.....TE/FB Adam McCaulley has good hands and runs well after the catch....transfer FB Brian Hall also has good hands out of the backfield....The Cardinal tight ends will be significant factors in Louisville's offensive plans this season....freshman RB Kolby Smith shows solid potential as a blocker and made a nice pick up of a blitz during a simulated scrimmage situation....Michael Bush has a rocket for an arm...he also throws the fade extremely well.....A DB's nightmare...RB Eric Shelton getting to the corner and squaring up his shoulders....P Brent Moody can get on a roll and kick it deep.....freshmen corners William Gay and Early McCray and safety's Malik Jackson and Brandon Sharp are very talented and could contribute early in their careers....
