The Cardinals program has had over 100 players selected in the NFL Draft

Louisville defensive lineman Sheldon Rankins is expected to become the latest Cardinal to be selected in the NFL Draft's first round

The 2016 NFL Draft begins on Thursday evening and will continue through Saturday and Louisville is expected to have a player chosen in the first round for a third consecutive year. Louisville is one of eight programs nationally that has produced at least one first-round pick the last two seasons, joining Central Florida, Texas A&M, Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, Florida and Florida State.

Louisville defensive lineman Sheldon Rankins has consistently been among the first round mock drafts, with Scout.com's analysis of 40 different projections placing him as the No. 11 overall selection.  When the Covington, Ga., native hears his name called on Friday night, he'll become the fifth Cardinal selected in the first round during the past three drafts and 13th in the program's history.

Since 2000, Louisville has had 47 players chosen in the NFL Draft, including a program best 10 selected in 2015.  In addition to Rankins, linebacker James Burgess could also hear his name called during the NFL Draft this weekend.  The Cardinals program has enjoyed 27 drafts with multiple players selected, including two straight and 10 since the 2000 draft.

Cardinals in the League have garnered over 50 Pro Bowl selections, with 17 chosen as NFL All-Pro, including five time honoree Johnny Unitas.

The NFL Draft begins with the first round on Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN and the NFL Network. Rounds 2-3 will begin on Friday at 7:00 p.m., with rounds 4-7 beginning on Saturday at noon.
