Louisville continued to do what it has done in mid-week games all season. Win.
Sure, this setting is different, in front of 2,671 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in the ACC Championship, but the result was the same. Sparked by another stellar outing from sophomore pitcher Kade McClure, and an offense that was highlighted by four home runs, including a pair from Will Smith, to defeat Wake Forest 9-5.
Despite giving up three hits and two runs in the first inning, McClure responded with a career-high 11 strikeouts in six innings of four-hit work. The 6-foot-7 righty improved to 12-0 on the season. He gave up just one hit following the first inning.
Smith led the Cardinals with five RBI, sparked by a pair of home runs. Nick Solak and Blake Tiberi also connected for home runs in the win.
"Really pleased with our team and our effort. That's a win against a really good team with a great offense," said U of L head coach Dan McDonnell, adding "we played a complete game tonight."
The Cardinals will play next on Friday at 11:00 a.m. against Clemson.
