Fall Practice: Day Five...Pads go on
The Cards put the pads on for the first time on Monday afternoon and immediately the intensity on the practice field increased tremendously. Though there was no full scale tackling going on, both the offense and defense showed some fire and intensity and looked ready to go on the first day with pads .
The team will begin two a days beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and then return at 3:30 p.m. for the afternoon session.
Here's Monday's report from the practice field.
Bush fires one to the wide receiver (ITV)
QB Stefan LeFors and Michael Bush received the majority of reps at quarterback on Monday. LeFors continued to perform well and looks like the starter for the opening game. He has command on the field and an understanding of the system....and he's effective moving the offense....Bush improves everyday and Monday was perhaps his finest outing of fall camp...he was on target all day and delivered deep ball after deep ball right on the money...his techniques and understanding of the system appear to be coming along and he had an impressive 10 yard completion during red zone drills that he rifled into the arms of a well covered receiver....
RB The duo of Eric Shelton and Lionel Gates will be special. Shelton will punish opposing defenders and Gates will slip out and make big plays around the corner. Brian Hall looked good at FB and appears to have solid hands out of the backfield. Freshman Kolby Smith picked up the blitz nicely and showed the ability to get to the corner and beat defenders upfield. He also made some nice receptions out of the backfield. T.J. Patterson cut well and gained some nice yardage working against the second and third team units.
WR Even though he won't play this season, Antoine Sharp continues to impress. Sharp made an outstanding over the shoulder the grab of a Michael Bush during passing drills. The starters, Josh Tinch, Broderick Clark and J.R. Russell, each caught the ball well during drills and skeleton passing situations.
The next group of AFROS (ITV)
TE You have to like how Richard Owens is catching the ball and turning up field and running after the catch. Owens looks like a big time contributor in both the running and passing games this season.
OL The first team line appears set with Travis Leffew and Jason Hilliard at tackle. Jason Spitz and Jerry Spencer at guard and Dan Koons at center. Spencer appears to be taking a leadership role on this group and really got downfield and run blocked well on Monday. The line appears to be coming together into a solid, cohesive unit.
DL Tyrone Saterfield made a super human effort during one-on-one tackling drills, shedding the blocker on consecutive plays and wrapping up the running back at the line. Elvis Dumervil spent a lot of time in the backfield on Monday and made 3/4 "would be" quarterback sacks. Amobi Okoye is receiving reps with the second team unit in Bobby Leffew's absence.
DB CB Gavin Smart performed well and made a couple of pass deflections during drills....J.T. Haskins and Antoine Harris were the number two corners....Harris is quickly improving his coverage skills and made a couple nice plays throughout practice....S Abe Brown dropped a near interception and S Kerry Rhodes leveled one of the best hits of the day. Brent Johnson continues to perform well and looks like he's becoming a leader in the secondary.
K/P Broderick Clark, Victor Glenn, Antoine Harris and Robert Haskins each saw reps returning punts...Clark and Glenn appear to have the edge....Wade Tydlacka and freshman K Todd Flannery took turns kicking off.....Tydlacka continues to punt well and looks like the starter....Brent Moody also continue to punt well. The punt coverage team has some mean nasty's chasing down returners like Robert McCune, Rod Day, Johnathan Jackerson, Greg Tinch, Brent Johnson and Brandon Johnson. All of those guys can get down the field quickly and will hit you hard when they arrive.
