Fall Camp, Day Seven: First Scrimmage

<b>FALL CAMP REPORT</b> -- Wednesday morning, the Cards scrimmaged for the first time during fall camp amd Michael Bush and Eric Shelton both turned in impressive performances. Here's our full report from the Cards first scrimmage.

Fall Practice:  Day Seven...First Scrimmage

The first scrimmage of fall camp is now complete.  Stefan LeFors took the snaps as the first team quarterback and Michael Bush was impressive once again throwing the ball.  RB Eric Shelton ran hard and appears to be staking his claim for the starting spot.

On defense, Chad Rimpsey, Kerry Rhodes  and Montavious Stanley turned in some outstanding plays for Coach Mike Gillhammer's unit.

Position Breakdown

QB  For the first scrimmage, the depth chart was....Stefan LeFors, Justin Rascati and Michael Bush...LeFors and Rascati were solid in the passing game.  Bush was impressive, completing several long passes, including a long touchdown strike.  Bush threw one interception that was tipped at the line of scrimmage.

RB  Lionel Gates continued to take reps as the first team running back and had a couple of nice carries to the outside.  Eric Shelton, who saw the majority of his reps with the second team, fumbled once but had two or three chain moving carries.  TE Richard Owens saw some reps at fullback with the first team and made a nice block to spring Shelton for a substantial gain.  FB Brian Hall turned in an impressive performance, making several nice runs against the second and third team defenses.

WR/TE  TIger Jones enjoyed a good scrimmage, making two diving catches for 20+ yard gains.  Robert Haskins hauled in a long pass from Bush and took in to end zone after shaking the defender in the secondary.  TE Wayne Riles caught a touchdown pass, fighting his way into the endzone.  Victor Glenn turned in another solid performance, grabbing a few passes.  Montrell Jones made a spectatular 30+ yard reception.

OL   T Renardo Foster played the entire scrimmage with the first unit with Dan Koons, Jason Spitz, Travis Leffew and Jerry Spencer.  The second team offensive line consisted of guards Kurt Quarterman and Chad Pinkston.  Tackles P.J. Tavarczky and center Will Rabatin.  The third team consisted of Danny Barlowe, Jon Scarborough, Josh Deer, Bubba Marshall and Devon May.

DL  DE Chad Rimpsey is starting to stand out with his recent play.  He had 2 sacks during the scrimmage and make a nice tackle on the edge.  Montavious Stanley applied good pressure and registered a sack against the one offense.  DL Elvis Dumervil sacked Michael Bush and DE Josh Williams made a sack against the third unit.  The second team line consisted of Matt Sanders, Amobi Okoye, Brinson Harley and Shane Bailey.

LB  John Cardoza replaced Robert McCune and turned in a solid performance, particularly against the run.  He had a few tackles during the scrimmage.

DB  S Kerry Rhodes made a big hit to open the scrimmage and forced a fumble from Eric Shelton.  Gavin Smart and Antoine Harris took turns as the first string cornerback.  CB Josh Minkins tackled RB Lionel Gates for a loss of yardage.  S Johnathan Russell intercepted a tipped Michael Bush pass.

K/P  The special teams blocked two field goals during kicking drills.

News and Notes

Freshman QB switched numbers from 6 to 8 for Wednesday's practice....former Cardinal safety John Fuqua and UofL Athletic Director Tom Jurich took in the Cards first scrimmage of fall camp....DL Bobby Leffew and LB Robert McCune did not participate during the scrimmage....McCune was rushed to the emergency room early Wednesday morning with a stomach virus....the special teams blocked another and kick during drills.....props to DT Tyrone Saterfield for chasing TE Richard Owens 20 yards downfield to make the tackle during scrimmage action....OL Renardo Foster played with the first team line during the scrimmage....Foster replace OT Jason Hilliard.....

Scouts Seat

DE Matt Sanders pursues the ball well...RB Kolby Smith cuts well and covers the ball strongly in traffic....LB Derionte Taylor, although undersized, will come up and stick you hard....TE Wayne Riles has the ability to deliver a blow to would be tacklers and makes great second effort...RB Eric Shelton continues to move his feet after first contact...
