Louisville senior Cole Hikutini became the latest Cardinal to be found on a national award preseason watch list.
The John Mackey Award, presented to the nation's top tight end, released its watch list on Wednesday morning and Hikutini is among 45 athletes on the initial watch list, including four others from the ACC.
Hikutini, who transferred to Louisville from City College of San Francisco prior to the 2015 season, appeared in 11 games, starting four, last season. He led all tight ends with 19 receptions for 348 yards, with three touchdowns. His 18.3 yards per catch average were best on the team.
Hikutini joins Keith Kelsey, DeVonte Fields and Lamar Jackson on preseason watch lists. (more)
Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2016 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 7, 2016 and then presented live on December 8, 2016 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and hisplace in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
Prior winners of the award, which began in 2000, include Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Dallas Clark and Daniel Graham.
