While it hasn't grabbed the headlines like the competition at quarterback from a season ago, the race to claim the first team kicking and punting responsibilities have remained tight over the course of the team's preseason work.
Sophomore Evan O'Hara and freshman Blanton Creque have remained close in the competition for the open spot vacated by former kicker John Wallace. Mason King, a redshirt freshman, and true freshman Austin Johnson have remained neck-and-neck for the open punter spot.
"It's a good competition, it's been a good race," U of L Special Team Coordinator Tony Grantham said following the team's Thursday practice before sharing that leaders have emerged at both positions.
"We've had one guy really take the lead at both spots and we're excited about the direction there."
With the pending decision seemingly made, the choice to announce it publicly may have happen until the Sept. 1 opener against Charlotte.
"We have it narrowed down," he said. "We know, but we don't want to say it just yet. We want to keep it to ourselves and we want to make sure that our opponent needs to find out on game day."
